Following the drama at Clounreask on Saturday when the Desmond League won the national Oscar Traynor Cup 4-3 on penalties, Limerick FC are hoping to put behind them a woeful display against Waterford United, and offer stern opposition to Cork City in the FAI Cup at Jackman Park this Friday (7.45pm).

And if they do champagne at Pike Rovers, then if Limerick fail to beat Wembley Rovers to regain the Premier Division title on Sunday, the ice will surely start to turn to water!

There could be a record crowd at Jackman Park. I hope it will not be a case when a Limerick team, playing at home, will have fewer supporters than the visitors. Only 369 attended for the Munster derby League game against Waterford last Friday.

Cork City are holders of the trophy and come to the city on the back of an outstanding 3-2 win over Derry City at the Brandywell. Two-nil in arrears with 20 minutes remaining, it was Abbeyfeale native, Denis Behan who was the hero with the winning goal.

I imagine that Mike Kerley will adopt a damage limitation approach, but a much improved performance will be required from Limerick who will probably be without Tommy Barrett who was married last Friday and is on his honeymoon with his wife, Carrie.

Barrett was badly missed against Waterford, who scored three times in the second half.

But the cup is notorious for upsets and hope springs eternal for Limerick, who certainly deserve support on this, their biggest occasion of the season.

There was a huge attendance at Clounreask for the Oscar Traynor final. While it did not live up to its pre-game billing when normal and extra time failed to bring a goal, the penalty shoot-out did not lack for drama, before the Desmond League made their own bit of history, taking the trophy 4-3.

Chances were at a minimum but the penalty shoot-out compensated and also produced the game’s hero, Billy Quirke.

The Abbeyfeale United goalkeeper turned in a spectacular performance, saving twice and then moving up to take the most decisive kick in the Desmond League’s history—when he was on target the huge home support went wild with delight.
