THE FAI will face a difficult task during the brief close season with regard to whether Mervue United will be awarded a license to become members of the first division.
That amazing away 3-0 win which dumped Kildare County out of the competition entitles the Galway club to membership of the first division.
The granting of such licenses has been a major issue in recent seasons and if Mervue cannot meet the required standards then, I wonder, what will the situation be?
ON THE local front there was plenty of action under the jurisdiction of LDMC and the Desmond league over the weekend.
In the city division three clubs advanced to the out of town stages of the FAI Junior Cup.
Top performance of the week-end came from Regional United who are having a marvelous season.
Top of the Premier League they are also making great headway in the FAI Cup.
Their latest effort was a 9-0 blitzing of Bruff United.
Danny Galvin was in superb form and scored four times with Mike Ahern getting two from his defensive position. Kieran O’Connell, Tom Fahy and Marty Foley were the other scorers in a completely one-sided affair.
Pike Rovers were expected to progress at the expense of Knocklong. But when it was 0-0 at the interval I am sure that some harsh words were spoken in the Pike dressing room during the break.
The words sparked an improvement and goals by Eoin Hanrahan and John O’Boyle brought the expected win.
Janesboro United travelled to Newport and were never seriously tested as they strolled to a 6-1 win.
Prolific scorer Shane Clarke had a hat-trick this time and Adrian Healy had two with Eddie O’Donovan completing the easy win.
Granville Rangers had to work hard for their 2-1 win against Dromore Celtic who had a 1-0 win against Croom the previous Thursday.
It was 1-1 at the interval with Conor Croke on the mark for Granville. But when Philip Clancy and Tom O’Shea missed penalties for Granville it was left to central defender, Enda Cregan to score the winner.
A Keith McNicholas hat-trick gave Wembley Rovers victory over Carew Park in the Premier League.
In the FAI Youths Cup there were wins for two local clubs against Clare opposition.
Barry Danaher, two, and David Cowpar scored for Regional United who beat Burren in Doolin.
Mungret Regional were to have travelled to Sixmilebridge to face Bridge Celtic but the Clare venue was unplayable and the game was transferred to Mungret who cruised to a 7-0 win.

Even at this very early stage it appears that it is going to be a battle between Glin Rovers and Newcastle west for premier league honours.
Glin are current leaders thanks to their whopping 8-0 win against Old Mill on Sunday.
Shane Culhane had a hat-trick, Garry Culhane had two and Mark Culhane, Bernard Dalton and Paul Sheehy were also on the mark.
This win leaves Glin with 19 points having won six, drawn one and lost once in eight games.
Rathkeale had a 4-1 win against Killeaney after being 1-0 in front at the interval. Declan Nash scored twice for the winners with Paul Hogan and Alan O’Shea also on the mark with Sean O’Connor scoring for Killeaney
Newcastle West have won all six of their games in the league and on Sunday they were in Munster Junior Cup action against their great rivals, Newcastle Rovers at Clounreask.
In front 3-0 at the interval Newcastle West had goals from Daniel Power, Anthony O’Donnell and Mark Doherty and while the losers pulled two goals back in the second half they could not get on terms.
In the same competition, Ballingarry travelled to Pallaskenry and had a 3-0 win with Danny O’Grady, Aidan Barrett and Francis Kiely getting the goals.

Major games are scheduled in both jurisdictions this week-end.
