Limerick 37 finished their first season with a 1-1 draw away to Monaghan United on Saturday evening. Derek McCarthy scored the opening goal for Paul McGee’s side but three minutes later the sides were deadlocked and so it remained to the end. It was a very successful start to life for Limerick and the committee can feel well pleased with their efforts. They will now start formulating plans for the season which begins in March. Paul McGee is likely to remain manager and it is essential that a manager be appointed quickly to allow whoever is chosen to afford that person sufficient time to sign players. On the local front the Munster junior cup continued at the week-end and there were no major upsets though a number of the fancied teams got frights before progressing. Regional United beat Caledonians 5-2 but the scoreline is flattering to them as two of their goals came late on. Mike Behan scored the opener for Regional and Danny Glavin made it two a few minutes later. Jeffrey McNamara pulled a goal back for Caledonians and Behan had a second before McNamara was again on the mark for Cals. Galvin had a second and Tony Fahy wrapped it up with late goals for Regional. The outstanding performance by goalkeeper JJ Hartigan was one of the highlights as Corbally advanced on penalties after extra and normal time failed to produce a goal in their game against Summerville Rovers. Hartigan saved two penalties as his side edged through to meet Regional on a 4-2 win. It was not a good day for Summerville as their B team also went out when beaten 2-0 away to Knockainey. Niall Finch scored in each half for the winners. It was a similar score in the game between Pallasgreen and Coonagh United. Alan Wallace and Dan Mulcahy put Pallasgreen into the next round. Another game that went to penalties was that between Stars Rovers and Herbertstown. The teams will meet again in the FAI Junior Cup shortly. Dave Connolly put Herbertstown in front but Alan Morton had Star level a few minutes after the interval. Neither side could manage a further goal and, in the penalty shoot-out, Star scraped through by 4-3. Pike Rovers were in top form when they doled out a 6-0 hiding to Kilfinane. Keith Hartnett (2), Dave Wall, Wayne O’Donoghue, Gary Long and Dermot Phelan were all on the mark in a one-sided affair. Ballynanty Rovers advanced with a 2-1 win against Croom United. A surprise looked a possibility when Croom took an early lead but Dave Dunphy, from a free, and Shane Guerin gave the city side their home draw in what promises to be a thriller against Pike Rovers. Aisling Annacotty also scored six when beating Meanus and this sets them up for a game against either Janesboro or Fairview Rangers. Paul Cummins scored twice for Aisling Annacotty whose other goals came from Anthony Cusack, Aidan Hurley, John Meskell and an own goal. The Limerick District league team will be hoping to emulate the deeds of the youths side when they face the West Waterford and East Cork League next Sunday in the Oscar Traynor Cup. The youths proved 10-0 winners last Sunday. Jeffrey Judge scored a hat-trick and the other goals were scored by George Daffy (2), Shane Byrnes,(2), Bobby Tier, Kevin Barry and Eoin Hanrahan. There was action, too, in the Lawson Cup when three games were played. Biggest winners were Wembley Rovers who beat Moyross United by a whopping 9-2. Jonathan Gaynor (2), Mike O’Halloran, Liam Barrett, Seamus Mulcahy, Paul O’Brien, Pat Sheehan, Ian Collins and Diarmuid O’Callaghan were the other scorers. Christy Doyle (2), Jason Purcell and John Mullane scored for Fairview who beat Holycross 4-0 and Granville Rangers, with goals by Enda Cregan and Philip Clancy, penalty, beat Kennedy Park 2-1 after extra time. Sean O’Toole scored for the losers. |
