The Munster Press golfing society shake themselves free of the shackles of winter and spring into action tomorrow at Water Rock Golf Club in Cork.

Perhaps the course is aptly named, as the rain has been an all too prominent feature of our weather for the past few months.

As tomorrow is Saint Valentines Day the members are requested to bring a red rose for the new captain.

The Press break new ground this year, as Therese O’Callaghan will be the first lady to take up the duties of Captain of the society.

Therese writes for the Irish Examiner and was an excellent camogie player with Cork. She hits the ball a long way.

Vice Captain is Kerry man Donal Hickey, who also works for the Irish Examiner.

Des O’Sullivan and Eddie O’Riordan continue in the duties of President and Secretary respectively while Evening Echo man Mark Woods remains on as society treasurer.

The remainder of the top brass are made up of committeemen Donal Sheehan of the Irish Examiner, Jackie MacGearailt of TG 4, Seamus Hayes of the Clare Champion and my colleague in this paper Mal Keaveney.

Tim O’Brien and Jim Olney both of the Irish Examiner are joint handicap committee secretaries.

Limerick members of the society include Arthur Quinlan, Tony Purcell, Charlie Mulqueen, Jimmy Woulfe, Eugene Phealan, Colm Kinsella, Kieran Clancy and Brian Gavin.

The Munster Press society is one of the most active socicities in the region and play in 23 outings during the year.

The courses they play on are evenly spread throughout Munster and include the Blarney Ramada, Lahinch, Dooks, Tralee, Limerick County, both Adare courses, the Manor and the Manor Hotel, Ballybunion, Killarney, Dromoland, and Shannon, where they will hold the captain’s prize this year and Cork Golf Club.

The Interprovincial Championship against the Ulster, Leinster and Connacht Press societies will take place at Carne Golf club in Belmulet at the end of May while ace photographer Dan Lenihan will be in charge of the away outing this year.

The members of the Press were saddened by the news that their oldest member Frank Sanquest died on Christmas Day.

Frank was 96 years of age but he played golf up to last year and was a regular and very popular member of the Munster Press.

He used a 4 iron off the tee and could hit it as long as a lot of members drive and he usually stayed on the fairway.

Frank seldom used a buggy and never bothered with the battery-powered trolley.

He will be sadly missed and the members are to hold a special outing every year in his memory.
