The Frothblowers Golfing Society

Spring is in the air, and society golfers all over Munster are looking forward with keen anticipation to the new season.

There are many hardy players of course who play all year round, but for golfers like Paul McDonogh of Limerick and Kilkee Golf Club, the new season doesn’t begin until April and he has only recently recovered his clubs from the attic.

Paul got a shock the other day, though, when he heard his King Cobra driver was on the banned list!

Members of the Frothblowers Golf Society are also fair-weather golfers and they are looking forward to their first outing of the year at Charleville Golf Club on Saturday March 29.

The Frothblowers were formed in 1976 at Adare Manor Golf Club.

Tom Kennedy, Jim Graham (Austin’s brother), the late Jack Cronin, Gerry Casey (the golfer, not the rugby player) and a few others were gathered around a big fire prepared by Mrs Kelly on a winter’s evening in the old Adare clubhouse, when the lads decided to form a golf society.

There are various stories told about how the unusual name came about, but I know Jack Cronin liked his pint and perhaps it was a frothy one on that night.

Jack also loved to sing and as he was a member of the McCormack Singers it was inevitable that he would become MC at the various post-match golfing outings.

Jack has now passed on to that great golf course up above, but Gerry Casey has taken over the MC job and he has a unique catch phrase.

Gerry begins the singsong by waving a white hankie in front of the person he wants to sing and shouts out “We have a live one here.” He never gets a refusal.

The Frothblowers held their AGM at the Claughaun Bar last Thursday evening. John Quilligan will be the new Captain, and Peter McNamara is the new Vice Captain.

Christy Downes continues on as treasurer while Ray Ryan is the hard working secretary.
