Limerick people are noted for being sports mad but at times this madness can creep into the realm of fanaticism.

In past years rival club supporters would not dream of socializing with one another.

Rugby fans, in particular, wouldn’t be seen ‘dead’ drinking in a rival supporters pub.

Young Munster fans would all frequent watering holes located ‘back of the monument’. Charlie Saint Georges, Austin Quinlivan’s etc.

You would find Shannon men and woman in The Mall Bar, The Corbally Bar or The Office. Garryowen supporters drink in Willie Sexton’s while Old Crescent fans would have one or two in Dan Reddan’s pub in Wolfe Tone Street.

UL Bohemians gather in one of Limerick’s most famous rugby pubs, Myles Breen’s in Shannon Street. The older Boh’s supporters though weren’t too fussy and they occasionally allowed Garryowen and Crescent men in for a drink but they had to know their place in the bar.

The junior clubs Thomond, Richmond and Saint Mary’s would all frequent pubs in their locality, while Presentation would have their refreshments in Jerry Flannery’s in Catherine Street.

With the passage of time the club barriers have been relaxed and people no longer call a mixed marriage an exchange of vows between a Shannon man and a Young Munster woman.

The Wilbury Golf Society, who have their meetings in Dan Reddan’s pub, now owned by Old Crescent man Anthony O’Dwyer, have no hang ups about mixing and indeed they must be one of the most cosmopolitan societies playing golf in the region.

Their President Sean Hartigan is a proud Garryowen man while their captain Noel Healy insists on wearing his Shannon number 3 jerseys to every outing.

Noel makes an exception on Captain’s Prize Day when he puts on his Munster jersey. Jim McGann, the hard working secretary of the society, is also a Shannon man and has been known on occasion to carry Buddha’s clubs at major outings.

Jim is also handicap secretary and tends to favour anyone wearing a blue and black shirt.

Wilbury’s have also taken the unusual step of appointing two vice captains Sean Neiland of UL/Bohemians and Brian Clancy of Richmond just to be sure, to be sure.

Dermot, (Darts Hogan) won last years ‘golfer of the year’, while additional members of the handicap committee include Mrs. John O’Brien of London Wasps and Jim O’Leary of Saint Mary’s.

Brian and Paul Reardon of Young Munster are the societies joint financiers while the members would also like to thank patrons big Tim Duggan of Old Crescent and ABC.

Willbury’s are also very proud of their out of town members including 6 golfers from Durrow in Co Laois who are also Munster supporters.
