The Limerick Insurance Golf Society is one of the oldest societies in Ireland, and still going strong.

A few months ago they pushed out the boat in a big way and invited insurance societies from Dublin, Galway, Cork and Waterford to join them for an outing at Adare Manor Hotel Golf Club.

A total of 112 golfers played that day and the winner was Padraic McNicholas of Ennis with 40 points. Tom Darcy of Nenagh was second on 39. Gerry Daly of Hibernian Insurance was third on 36. Former Junior International soccer player Mick O’Brien came fourth on 35 and in fifth place was John O’Donoghue.

John won an All Ireland hurling medal with Tipperary in 1971 and was an outstanding goalkeeper in his day.

Dick Power, a great marathon runner in his early days, is the present Captain of the society, while Bill Cullen of Newport is the incoming Captain.

Joe Bourke, the Chairman, is a versatile sportsman and was an excellent soccer player with Limerick, winning an FAI Cup medal in 1971 and he still holds the top points scoring record with Bohemians in rugby.

Diarmuid Reddan, secretary of the society, was a fine scrum half with Old Crescent. Since retiring from rugby Diarmuid has become a very good Bridge player.

Diarmuid’s brother Eoin is the current Irish scrum half and played number 9 for Wasps in their Heineken Cup game against Munster last Saturday night.
