The Musketeers and Up Date On Wilbury’s Golf Society

The Musketeers

All for one and one for all was the motto of the original Musketeers and it was the ideal motto for three Limerick gentlemen Kevin Fitzpatrick, Nay Cantillon and Frank Davis.

The three friends would get together most weekends for a game of golf out at Nenagh Golf Club and the stakes were low as the golf was in the fun rather than the serious category.

Kevin, during his younger sporting days, was an excellent goalkeeper for Limerick soccer club, playing alongside players like Al Finucane and Joe O’Mahoney in the heady days of Limerick soccer when many thousands would turn up to watch the team play at the Markets Field.

Nay’s sport is rugby and he is presently the very efficient PRO of Young Munster who he sincerely hopes will return to the First Division of the AIB All Ireland League.

Frank is the elder lemon in the society and has become the Musketeers first octogenarian. He is fittingly the Hon. Life President of the merry band.

After a few years the three Musketeers were joined by a fourth, would be golfer, Larry Kelly and Nay called him Dartanion.

Kevin thought that if this continued they would be putting down the golf clubs and taking fencing lessons. He put it to his comrades in arms that it would be a good idea to form a golfing society.

The lads used to retire to Browne’s pub in Parteen after their day out at Nenagh and following a long discussion on names The Musketeers were formed. The year was 1987 and the society has grown in numbers since then and they now have a regular turn out of 40 or so members.

Other well-known sportsmen who play in the Musketeers include Mark Murphy, Adrian Hopkins, Charlie O’Donovan, Morgan Mulcahy and John Hartery. John was a fine scrum half in his rugby playing days with Thomond RFC and is currently involved in the major Thomond Park development committee.

The Musketeers have a unique way of electing a captain but the process is a secret one. They are also very secretive about the venue for their first outing. My guess is it will be Nenagh Golf Club but I’ll let you know when I crack the code.
