Geri Baggott, secretary of the Ryan 2000 Golfing Society, loves her game of golf. “I suppose you could say when I was a young girl I had a golf club in my hand before a doll,” said Geri, whose late father, Kevin Quinn was Secretary Manager of Limerick Golf Club. “The past year has been one of my best,” said Geri, as she won a prize at nearly every outing the Ryan 2000 played in. “I keep accumulating minus points when I win,” continued Geri, who now plays off a 27 handicap, “but I still manage to get in the prizes.”
The gift though backfired on the Garryowen rugby man. “I love my Pings,” said Geri. “She does,” said husband Gerry, “but it’s taking things a bit too far when she takes them to bed with her.” The Ryan 2000 Golf Society were hoping to play their Christmas outing at Shannon Golf Club last Wednesday but had to postpone it due to the bad weather. They now hope to have the outing this Wednesday. Cormac McGowan is favorite to take the top prize, which he hopes will be a turkey. Many years ago, Cormac had a bad experience with a turkey. He was working at the time for Sloans Department Store on Roche’s Street and won a prize for being their top salesman coming up to Christmas. The competition was sponsored by one of the Sloans Dublin suppliers and as it was approaching Christmas, Cormac phoned up enquiring when he would have his turkey delivered. He was told it would be sent down by train straight away. Christmas week arrived and no sign of the turkey, in spite of frequent phone calls. Cormac had already told his good wife not to bother buying a bird as one was on its way from Dublin. Eventually the turkey arrived on Christmas Eve by Fast-track at Colbert Station. “He was in a shoe box,” said Cormac, “and he had long legs with a small body. He looked like the Road Runner.” The crestfallen Cormac dropped into Albie O’Carroll’s pub in Edward Street for a pint on his way home. The lads were having a game of 45 but the frustrated publican told Cormac their turkey prize hadn’t been delivered.
“It’s your lucky night,” said Cormac. “Give me £10. I have a lovely bird here,” and he placed his turkey, hidden in the shoebox, on the counter. McGowan made a quick exit from the pub! Other Ryan Society members hoping to make an impression at The Christmas outing at Shannon include Paddy Browne, Mary Galvin, Ann Nix, Ann Murphy, Sean and Margaret O’Shea, Bernard O’Sullivan, Nick Hogan, Jim Enright, John McKillican, Mary McMahon, John Nash society treasurer, and the ‘Three Amigos’, Frs Frank O’Dea, Joe Shire and Con Collins. |
