Society Golf - Dad’s Army Celebrate Captain’s Day outing

Liam Moloney, captain of Dad’s Army golf society, celebrated his Captain’s Day in style at Shannon Golf Club a few weeks ago.

The vast majority of Dad’s Army are members of Shannon Golf Club so they generally hold their maneuvers there every Tuesday.

Liam played hurling and Gaelic Football for Limerick and he was naturally a bit down when the hurlers bowed out of the championship but he was delighted with the display of the footballers against Meath last Saturday.

The captain couldn’t win his own prize but he had an excellent round on his day and followed that up with a fine win in Charleville last week.

He uses the same driver that Padraig Harrington had in the Open and while not as long as the Open Champion he still gets a fair distance with his tee shot.

Liam was also delighted with the form shown by Greg Norman at the Open. “He showed what us old fellows can still do”, he said.

Mull remembers when Greg Norman played in a Pro Am at Shannon Golf Club in the early eighties.

“He was hitting the ball a mile and at the 18th he drove the ball 400 odd yards. We have a plaque here in Shannon on the spot where his ball finished”, said Mull.

The former Limerick GAA star humbly admitted that it takes him two shots, “on a good day” to reach ‘Norman’s rock’.

Another in form golfer in Dads Army is corporal Willie Hayes. Willie is like an old wine, he gets better with each passing year and it was no surprise when he won the Captain’s prize.

Gerry O’Malley took second prize on the day while canny golfer Pat Ahern came a close third.

Luigi is the popular President of Dad’s Army and he held his Prize Day at Shannon yesterday. I’ll have the results and photographs from that outing next week.
