Knockfierna Golf Society members have been hitting the small ball since 1992 and they now have a membership of 90 players, 25 of whom are ladies. "The ladies keep us on our toes," said society secretary Gerard Murphy, "and they are always first to turn up at every outing. Mind you, a few of them are very handy at the game and often feature in the prizes." Knockfierna have eight local outings every year playing Adare Manor Hotel Championship course, Shannon, Ennis, Ballykisteen, Charleville, Newcastle West, Adare Manor and Charleville. They always play their first outing at Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort in March. Noel Smith was this year's winner on the course that is soon to stage the Irish Open Golf Championship. Denis McCoy is this year's Captain and Paddy Stewart Trainor is the President. Helen Smith takes over the duties of Vice Captain with Liam Machessy as the hard working treasurer. Jim Moore is the PRO for this year and Gerard Murphy continues as the society secretary. As the society has a large membership, they decided to form a committee to look after matters. Members are Pat Spillane, Marian Noonan, Liam Fitzgerald, Pat O'Dea, Marie Noonan, Noel Smith, Peter Healy, Mossie O'Connor, Mike McCarthy and Paddy Roche. Knockfierna held their last outing at Shannon Golf Club on April 12, and they had a turn out of 50 golfers for the excellent day's golf. Liam Mahesh was first overall. Mike McCarthy was second while Mossie O'Connor was a close third. John Murphy came fourth. Denis Noonan fifth and Dan Cagney sixth. Tom Tracey won Category A. Second was Tom Noonan. Peter Healy won Category B with Donal McGoey second. Category C winner was Willie Molyneaux WITH David Fitzgerald in second place. Noel Smith won the front nine and Bernard Machessy took the back nine prize. The 'away' outing is looked forward to every year and Gerard Murphy told me they are all saving for the trip to Carlow. "We have been going on the away trip for the past eleven years," he said, "and we are really looking forward to this year's trip on October 10 and 11, as we are playing on the Championship Course at Mount Wolseley. We stay overnight at the hotel and then play at Killerig Golf Club the following day." The next outing of the society will be held at Ennis Golf club on May 17. |
