The Leprechauns, who jealously guard an unbeaten record, were determined from the first game that they would keep their unique record and thanks to outstanding performances from Vinnie Ryan, Noel Healy and Ray Ryan they came out on top as European Kings.

Graham Burns, Mike Doyle and Timmy Coughlan with some young lad called Steve Gerard (!) who made several attempts to try and join the Limerick Leprechauns…

The team made their way to Cardiff to cheer on Munster on Saturday but they unfortunately had to turn down an invitation to accompany Paul O’Connell and the rest of the Munster team on the open top bus as Packie Durkan had called a training session last Sunday.

The golfing Leprechauns also took part in a triangular tournament when they were on the Portugal tour and they upheld the proud tradition as they won the three outings they played in.

Noel Healy even broke the course record in one of the golf clubs in Villamoura while Ray Ryan had the distinction of recording 6 birdies in the one round.

The versatile Vinnie Ryan had a hole in one which was an astonishing feet as Vinnie is normally a pitch a putt expert and only took up golf recently.

Niall O’Shea and Len Dinneen junior were out together in the first 4-ball and the two former Crescent Schools stars hit it off so well that Vinnie decided to promote them to the A team for the rest of the tournament.

Former Young Munster player Gerry Casey now lives in Portugal and he was able to give the Leprechauns detailed information about the courses they were to play on. Sonny Kiely, another newcomer to golf, and President of the club said that Gerry’s information was invaluable.

Francis Brosnahan, a proud holder of an All Ireland medal with Young Munster in 1993, has also just taken up golf but like Sonny he is a versatile sportsman and he didn’t let the side down.

Derek Tobin and Mike Murphy were the anchormen each day. Derek was an excellent scrum half with Young Munster while Mike, father of Munster centre Barry, was a live wire back row forward with Bohemians.

Both men dovetailed very well on the fairways in Portugal.

Peter Clohessy unfortunately couldn’t make the trip but he has assured the President he will definitely make the next one.

The Claw hits the ball a long way and has had some excellent rounds in Kilkee Golf Club.

Vinnie Ryan has already put contingency plans into operation for a double tournament in August in Kilkee.

The Leprechaun’s play their annual tournament on the beech against the Kilkee Fallen Stars and this year they hope to make it a three-day event with the rugby taking top priority followed the next day by golf against the same opposition at Kilkee golf club and a barbeque the next day.

I will keep you posted about the date.
