The Moose Golfing Society is probably one of the most progressive societies in the Munster region but recently they held an EGM to discuss away trips.
This year’s captain Bobby Fleming, who would have been a travel agent in another life, told me the current economic situation was the main topic of conversation at the EGM.
The committee decided to send Bob to Lanzarote on a fact-finding mission. “I was going anyway,” said Bob. In fact, the Captain played golf in Lanzarote a few years ago on the island’s only golf course at Costa Teguise. “It’s an amazing course to play on,” said Bob, “the bunkers have black volcanic sand in them and the rough is mainly volcanic shale which you have to play out of. This of course presents a problem as the clubs get damaged and it is advisable to hire out the golf clubs over there.” Christy Hannon, one of the best-known members of the Moose, has already decided not to go… “Christy took up golf five years ago,” continued Bob, “and he just couldn’t go wrong. He was winning prize after prize, but then he got too caught up in the game and began to read books on clean ball striking and stance. His form has taken a bit of a dip,” said Bob, “and he now uses two drivers. One has an 8.5 loft, while the other has a more modest 10.5 loft.” Bob added: “He uses the 8.5 one into the wind and the 10.5 with the wind behind.” Christy has become very attached to his drivers and he has no intention of hiring clubs in Lanzarote. The Captain has found that the cost of a round in Costa Teguise is just €40. The hire of clubs costs another €25 euro and a golf trolley, one you pull, costs €7. Bob is off in two weeks’ time and will report back to the committee in due course. Meanwhile, back on the playing side of things the society’s last outing was held at Cahir Park. Pat Lawlor won the competition. Fergus O’Donovan was second and Christy Hannon came a close third. The drivers were working well that day. Mike Reddan had an off day in Cahir Park but is odds on favorite for ‘golfer of the year’.
Mike, who plays out of East Clare golf club, plays off a handicap of 3 and has been in excellent form this year. They also compete annually in the Alzheimer’s Classic at Limerick Golf Club. Joe Quane is the man in charge of this outing which will be held at Limerick Golf Club on August 2.
The Moose take 30 slots on the time sheet every year. |
