A game of golf can cost you an arm and a leg in some of the courses around Ireland but Stryker Golf Society in Raheen got a great deal for their annual away trip last weekend.

They booked into the Ramada Blarney Golf and Spa resort for two nights bed and breakfast, played 2 games of golf on the excellent course and also had an evening meal all for just 175 euro.

Society captain Michael Ryan told me they had a very enjoyable outing and he could relax as the event had been organized by last years captain Robert Singleton.

“The standard of golf was of a high order,” said Michael, “and while the course was hard enough we had some excellent scoring over the two days”.

Brian Fitzgerald was the overall winner over the 2 days and Michael presented him with the D.P.Whelan perpetual trophy.

Maurice Whelan won category A. Westley Fitzgerald was second. Mike Ahern came third and vice captain of the society John Brophy came a close fourth.

Eddie, (Dick Turpin), Mooney came first in the B category. Dermot Ryan was second while the captain won a prize in third place.

Joe Waters won the guest prize. John Doyle came second while Ger, (The Road Runner), Meehan came third.

The society decided to introduce a new category this year for retired personnel.

“Only two of the retired lads turn up” said Michael, “but in fairness we only decided at the last minute to introduce it”.

Harry McNamara and Tom Brynes had only retired last year and we gave Harry a Ping cap as he beat Tom.

We will have about eleven retiring at the end of this year so we hope to make the retirees category a regular feature of our outings”.

Cormac McGowan, Michael Phayer and company will need to get in a little practice.
John Scanlan is this year’s president while Alistair Lynch is the society secretary and treasurer.

Michael Ryan will hold his Captains Prize day on June 12th at Newcastle West golf club while the societies next outing will be on Saturday at Woodstock golf club.

Rumor has it that Johnny Downes has been practicing hard during the past week. Johnny can now concentrate on his golf as Old Crescent has managed to stay up in the Second Division.

Mulcair outing this Saturday

The first Mulcair Golf Society outing of the year will take place this Saturday April 12 in Adare Manor Golf Club (old course). Assemble at 9.30 sharp. The outing is sponsored by John Lee & Son Auctioneers, Main St, Newport, and AIB Newport. All members new and old are welcome. Contact Richard Lyons for details on 087-6384776.
