Ballysheedy Golf Society

THE Ballysheedy Bar and Steak House have been doing so well in the inter-pub golf competition that they hope to start their own golf society in the new season.
Garoid Murphy, co-owner of the bar with John Ryan, told me they have had a great response from their members and they will be all set to go in April.
Ballysheedy had an excellent outing against the Claughan Bar two weeks ago, and won in the end by three matches to two.
Well known sportsman Eamon Grimes is one of the main men on the team.
“Eamon has been in sparkling form this year,” said Garoid, “and he was involved with Limerick Golf Club’s great win in the Pierce Purcell Cup.”
Eamon Jr is also a fine golfer, and he, too, is a member of Ballysheedy.
Former Limerick hurler Liam Dooley also plays and young Eamon Dooley is often in the prizes.
Another father and son team, Brendan and Brian Slattery turn out regularly for the team, and Richard Sellers, Christy Hannon, Paddy and Robert Tubridy and John Ryan have been putting in extra winter training to keep up the high standard of the team.
Team manager is Liam ‘Bomber’ Walsh who is one of the great motivators in sport.
“Bomber is one of the best men I know to get the team going before our outings,” said Garoid.
Eamon Grimes said he was a natural and would not be out of place in a hurling dressing room before a big match.
“Every time I see Bomber,” said Eamon, “the word inspirational crosses my mind.”
Ballysheedy’s next game in the inter-pub is against the Geraldine Bar on Saturday.
“Unfortunately,” continued Garoid, “we have a big problem as a number of our players won’t be available. The Four Elms pub have an annual fixture against the Valley Inn on the same day and young Eamon Grimes, Liam Dooley, Brian and Brendan Slattery are committed to playing for the Four Elms. The other problem we have is that Richard Sellers will also be away as he is off to London for the weekend.”
Garoid is confident, however, that his team will rise to the occasion. “We have brought a few subs in and Bomber has taken them under his wing for the past few weeks. He has had them out in the evenings at Limerick County driving range and is impressed so far with what he saw.”
The Moose Golfing Society held their Captain Bob Fleming’s Day at Adare Manor & Golf Resort recently and there was some magnificent scoring on the day.
By all accounts Bob left nothing to chance on his day and even organised a few helicopter rides for his members prior to the golf outing.
The versatile golfer was away this week but I hope to catch up with him in time for next week’s column.
