Mick Barry’s Captain’s prize MICK Barry has been the proud captain of Patrickswell Golf Society this year and he was leaving nothing to chance for his Captain’s Day.He decided last year that he wanted to have his day in the picturesque town of Killarney and with the help of his society secretary Tony O’Neill they booked Killarney Golf and Fishing Club for the outing.Mick, who spent a number of years working in England, loves the outdoor life and since he returned to Limerick a number of years ago he gets out on the golf course whenever he can. He is a member of Adare Manor Golf Club but he loves the magnificent scenery in Killarney and he was determined to have his day by the lakes.“I don’t think there is a more beautiful spot on a fine day than Killarney Golf Club” said Mick. “The lakes and the mountains are a breathtaking back drop to the golf courses and we had a most pleasant day on the O’Mahony’s Point course for my captains prize”.The outing was planned meticulously. A coach arrived in Patrickswell on Mick’s big day and all the ‘Well golfers took their place on the bus in high spirits. The ‘Well of course is renowned for it’s great hurling tradition and they have a number of big hitters in their ranks among them big Christy Murphy, Garry Kirby, Frankie Nolan and the charismatic Richie Bennis. Gerry Molyneaux, the treasurer of the society, is the proprietor of Tiger Golf in Patrickswell and he was the pre tournament favorite.Kieran D’Arcy, the handicap secretary, was another expected to do well. The Captain had been praying for a rain free day, he got his wish, and the golf was of a very high standard. After the outing the members sat down to an excellent meal in the magnificent Killarney clubhouse. Then followed the presentation of prizes and a witty speech from the Captain. The return journey in the coach was a hilarious affair with President Jimmy Mulqueen taking over the Simon Cowel role of adjudicator and awarding points for the various singers.Jimmy O’Rahilly, the vice captain, won the competition although a few of the lads said it was a fix.The forthcoming recession isn’t going to stop the members continuing with their fundraising efforts to raise some cash for their proposed away trip to Spain next year. |
