SHEILA Manning left the Unicorn men trailing in her wake as she won the top prize at the Unicorn Golf Society’s first outing of the year at Rathbane Golf Club last Saturday.
In an age where there are one or two golf clubs in Ireland making it awkward for lady members, Sheila scored a blow for the fairer sex by leaving top golfers like Tommy Kelly, Mike Thompson, Gerry Meehan and Albert Barry in her wake, as she returned a fine 37 points to take first prize. Sheila only took up the game a few years ago, playing in Rathbane Golf Club.
She may be small in stature but she hits the ball well and is now off a creditable 23 handicap.
Brian Green Jr has been putting in a lot of practise lately. He even bought a new driver on vacation in Brazil, but had to be content with second place on the day with 36 points.
Tommy Kelly is considered the best golfer in the Unicorn society but he had to settle for third spot with 35 points.
Tommy, though, wasn’t himself over the weekend.
The former Gouldavoher man is a staunch Manchester United supporter and he had an uneasy feeling about the weekend’s Premiership matches and Liverpool’s emergence as a challenge to United’s hopes of taking yet another title.
At the prizegiving in the Unicorn last Saturday night he was in the depths of despair as Liverpool went top, following their 1-0 win over Fulham.
Tommy’s form was so bad that went home early leaving his trophy behind him.
On Sunday evening, normality had returned as Man U beat Aston Villa by a late, late goal from new boy Federico Macheda and his beloved Reds were back at the top.
“Never in doubt,” said Tommy, as he swaggered back into the Unicorn on Sunday evening, wearing his Ronaldo jersey, to collect his trophy.
Cyril Garvey also won a prize coming just behind Tommy in fourth spot.
The front and back 9s were won by father and son Ken and John Doyle.
