Con Walsh often gets out to the driving range but the weather has been so good recently that the retired CIE man gets out on the golf course whenever he can. “I find golf is ideal for relaxing,” said Con, “and you are getting in that little bit of exercise out in the fresh air.” Con is a staunch member of the CIE golfing society and also a member of Adare Manor Golf Club. “A number of us old boys retired from CIE together and we are enjoying ourselves as so many of the lads play golf and we meet regularly on the course,” he continued. The CIE golfing society has been in existence since 1963 and they play nine outings a year. Jack O’Sullivan, Tony O’Connor and Jim Roche were involved in the early days and they have 45 active members playing at present. Con is the Treasurer while Cecil Ryan is this year’s captain and Ian Dobson the President. Tony O’Brien and Dan Bourke are in charge of prizes while Willie Connery, another fine Adare golfer, looks after the scorecards and presentation of prizes. Jim Galvin has the arduous job of booking the golf courses. “We run the society on a co-op basis,” said Con, “with everyone helping out.” Jack Dawson playing off a 22 handicap won the Captain’s prize and the society members are looking forward to the Christmas outing on December 15th at Shannon Golf Club, where everyone gets a prize. |
