Conor Murray produced his finest individual display ever when guiding Young Munster to a tremendous 42-22 victory over Belfast Harlequins in the semi-final of the AIB Division Two League at Tom Clifford Park.

Murray emerged with an awesome tally of 32 points, arriving from a couple of fine tries and an exceptionally accurate boot. The home side were in cruise control in the opening 40 minutes, after which they retired 32-3 to the good – game, set and match for the cookies.

Harlequins closed the gap somewhat in the closing-half, but Mick Lynch's side – with an average age of 25 – had plenty in reserve, and will be fancied to win next Saturday's final against University College Cork at Donnybrook.

The Division Three Final will involve unbeaten Bruff and Instonians, who beat Banbridge and Queen's University in their respective semi-finals.

Gaelic Games

Limerick supported Christy Cooney is his successful contest to become the 37th President of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA).

Surprisingly beaten by Nickey Brennan three years earlier, Cooney – a one time senior FáS official in Limerick – bounced back from that setback with a comfortable win over Munster colleague/rival Seán Fogarty and Liam O'Neill of Leinster. Cooney will served as President-designate for the next 12 months, with his two-year term to commence from convention 2009.

Tennis

Limerick's Conor Niland produced the heroics at Fitzwilliam to propel Ireland to a shock 3-2 win their Davis Cup showdown against Morocco.

In a crucial tie, Niland came from two sets down to register a pulsating victory over Mounir El Aarej. After the opening couple of sets, Niland looked in big trouble. But he responded in style, saving two break points at 3-3 in the fourth set, and then reeled off an amazing nine games on the trot.

Without question, the full house were treated to one of the greatest Davis Cup matches of all time courtesy of Messrs. Niland and El Aarej.
