SOCCER
Former Limerick FC netminder Noel Mooney says that League of Ireland clubs qualifying for European Competitions in the near future is a viable goal – as is profitability and investor appeal, he claimed.
The League’s Director of Marketing at the FAI insisted: “The league could become an investor’s playground. It would take far less investment to get an Irish team playing in at least the group stages of the Champions League than to get an English league team there. It’s something that investors haven’t seen yet but they’re beginning to.
“An investor putting €3 million into a team like Galway Unite would have a very good chance of competing with the billionaires who invest in the English Premier League.”
Mooney, a native of Cappamore, kept goal with Limerick FC for several seasons until his appointment to this role by the FAI a couple of years ago.
BASKETBALL
Limerick duo Stephen King and Jason Killeen are both members of the Irish Squad for next weekend’s Emerald Hoops International Tournament against US College giants Notre Dame, Iceland and Poland at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
King is attached to Limerick Lions while Killeen is in the final year of a scholarship in the United States.
As a warm-up to next weekend, Notre Dame met Limerick Lions at the University Arena inside the last few days. The visiting panel includes Luke Harangody, named the Big East Player of the Year 2007 and a member of the All-American Squad.
Several TV networks from the US covered Notre Dame’s visit to the mid-west.
GREYHOUND RACING
James (Jim) Roche registered one of the biggest wins of his training career when Allmightyjack proved himself Ireland’s top sprinter winning the two bend classic, the €35,000 Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup Final, at Dundalk.
