BOXING

Andy Lee’s much anticipated professional home debut at the University Sports Arena on Saturday week will be against Alejandro Gustavo Falliga of Argentina, it has been announced by promoter Brian Peters.

Lee is currently putting the final touches to his fight-night preparation with current heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in Florida.  Unbeaten in his 14 outings in the paid-ranks, Lee has dreamed of this occasion since his childhood days.

Falliga (25), has suffered three defeats in 19 pro bouts, but is relishing his latest test.  “I want to test myself against the best,” he stated.  “I’m still a young guy and you learn from your defeats.  My last defeat was in December on a split decision.  I was very upset at that one because I knocked-out my opponent twice and I still didn’t get the decision.”

He added:  “Of course I know all about Lee’s record and reputation and it’s all very impressive but when the bell goes it just comes down to two guys in the ring so we will see what happens.”

Tickets for Ladbrokes.com Fight Night are completely sold-out.

SWIMMING

All passed off swimmingly at the official opening by President of Ireland Mary McAlesse of the new €6 million Askeaton Pool & Leisure Centre on Monday.

A host of national and local TDs were on hand to greet President McAleese on her arrival at the magnificent sporting centre – these included local swimming club member and Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council Kevin Sheahan.

After her speech and tape-cutting, the President waited around a little while to meet locals before an another engagement had to met in Limerick city.
