BOXING ![]() KNOCK OUT: Andy Lee finishes Willie ‘The Gladiator’ Gibbs in the final round of last Saturday night’s professional fight at ther UL Arena. Lee took a gnash to the head before ending the contest in dramatic fashion. Picture: Keith Wiseman In the Limerick man’s first bout since his surprise knockout by Brian Vera in the Spring, middleweight Lee produced a mature display of controlled boxing, winning nearly every rout on his with to a 16th professional victory. However, Lee picked up two cuts to the head (both accidental head clashes), which will keep out of the ring until October. “With the cuts and my hands sore, I will be taking time off to heal up,” explained Lee. Tentatively, an August 8th date was available for Lee in Chicago, but is that now off the agenda. “I have learned a lot and I think I have developed as a boxer and matured – they say that is a test of a man when he is down and I was down for a few months and my head dropped and my confidence dropped.” He added: “I always believed in myself and I knew what I could do. I just needed the chance to get back in the ring and show people what I can do and do myself justice – I didn’t do myself justice against Vera.”
