RUGBY
Defending champions Munster will open the defence of their Heineken European Cup with a Pool One fixture against French side Montauban at the revamped Thomond Park on Friday, October 10th–the match will be televised live on Sky Sports, one of then live games on each of the opening two weekends of the tournament.

Australian Tony McGahan, the defensive coach last season, takes over at the helm from coach Declan Kidney.

He anticipates a tough defence right from the very start.  “Montauban will be a very interesting–and difficult–start for us an, at the moment, we don’t know that much about them.

However, they have done superbly well in the Top 14 in order to qualify for the Heineken Cup for the first time and there is absolutely no way we will be understating them,” he said.

CAMOGIE
Limerick suffered yet another shattering defeat in the Gala All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship, this time at the hands of last year’s beaten finalists Cork (2-21 to 1-5).

The outing represented a fifth defeat on the trot for Limerick, a side that scaled memorable heights by clinching the All-Ireland B Championship and League 1B titles under Ciaran Carey’s management only last season.

Limerick trailed 0-15 to 1-2 at the interval in Ballinlough, with the goal arriving from the stick of former All-Star Eileen O’Brien.

TENNIS
Conor Niland suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine in a marathon Davis Cup outing at Fitzwilliam.

From being two sets up, the number one seed wound-up losing 4-6 4-6 6-4 7-6 (9/7) 7-5 after more that four hours on the outside court.

Niland made the ideal start, breaking his 135-ranked opponent to love in the opening game, and a further break in the ninth game of the second set, helped him to an early 2-0 advantage.

But the Ukrainian showed all his class by leveling at two sets apiece before a break in the 11th game of the decider, which was immediately followed by the visiting player serving out to clinch the tie.
