AN expletive-ridden half-time speech given by Limerick IT manager and current Waterford boss Davy Fitzgerald during the college’s Fitzgibbon Cup Final outing with Waterford IT has been removed from the internet.

The three minutes footage of Fitzgerald’s interval address to his players in Cork is believed to have been secretly recorded on a mobile phone..

The video, which was removed from YouTube ‘due to terms of use violation,’ had appeared on the hosting website in various files in recent weeks and received more than 50,000 hits.

That happens in 99.9 per cent of dressing-rooms around the country,” claimed Fitzgerald.

All that I say is that the clown who put it on (the internet) mustn’t have too much between his ears. He doesn’t do anything for a team and that’s maybe why he’ll never make it.”

Limerick IT were beaten in an epic final, a third-level showpiece that necessitated additional time to separate the sides.

CYCLING

UNLIMITED tourism potential is the main benefit of the Faílte Ireland sponsored Tour of Ireland, which passed through Limerick at the weekend, according to Shannon Development.

Television images of the race were screened across the globe, with RTE Two producing a 60-minute highlights package that night.

This impact of this event will be huge in terms of tourism promotion for the city and county and was featured on 180 television markets worldwide,” commented Pat Daly of the development company.

Mayor John Gilligan waved the cyclists on their way from outside historic St John’s Castle on a beautiful Summer’s morning en route to Dingle, taking in such scenic hotspots as Adare and Athea, along with the challenging route through the West Limerick capital of Newcastle West.

England’s Russell Downing won the testing 186km run into Kerry. The foundations were laid as early as the second hour of the outing prior to the An Post Sprint at Athea when Magnus Backtedt of Sweden moved forward to break the peloton’s resistance, and Downing–who was later to experience difficulties with his bike–was also in the frame at this point.

Downing led entering the final day but was overtaken in the end by three-time Italian national time trial champion and former Giro D’Italia pink jersey holder Marco Pinotti, a 32-year-old from Rotheringham and a member of the US-based Team Columbia.

RUGBY

YOUNG Neville Melbourne was the star performer for Garryowen FC as the Light Blues secured outright victory in the Munster Meteor Sevens Tournament, which it hosted at Dooradoyle.

Melbourne, a younger brother of Mark, was a regular on the try-scoring list during the hugely successful daylong outing which was largely a fun occasion and one which raised funds for ‘Headsup,’ a text referral service from Rehab Care, which aims to help young people in difficulty by offering support group information for a range of issues via text at 50424.

In an enjoyable final, the home club emerged seven tries to three winners over UCC.

Sixteen of the top teams from across the province participated in the tournament.

GREYHOUND RACING

ROCKING Rolo–the property of Limerick duo Denis O’Malley and Pat O’Connor – was a quite appropriate winner of a valuable AIB Limerick sponsored Stake at Curaheen Park, Cork.

The winner edged ahead of the pacemaking Evons Murralli at the third bend and managed to avoid serious trouble in the home straight to come home alone in a quality time for 28.65.

Earlier on a really fine card, former Bank of Ireland colleagues Bob Shanahan and Noelle O’Neill, both also of Limerick, were in the winners enclosure after Fun Seeker triumphed in the Munster Greyhound Supplies Stakes Trophy.
