Page 1 of 3 BOXING Ahead of his next professional outing at the National Arena in Dublin early next month, Limerick’s Andy Lee has revealed that he will be in action in his native city pretty soon, perhaps as early as February. “Limerick is a small county but they’re mad about their sport. They just get behind everyone; they’re great supporters and it’s the same with boxing it will be brilliant,” stated the Detroit-based unbeaten middleweight contender, recently voted one of the top five prospects in the world. He learned his skills with the St. Francis Boxing Club on Mungret Street.
The most obvious venue for any professional fight would be the University of Limerick Sports Arena, or possibly some conference centre at a local hotel. Figures released by the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) reveal that 15,000 hits from first-timers to its new website were registered in its first full week of operation. In the opening five days of its tote betting facility (whereby punters can view live pictures from Shelbourne Park, Harrold’s Cross and Curaheen Park and place tote bets), around 500 new accounts were opened, while an encouraging level of corporate bookings was also noted. “We know that lots of things have to be improved. However, it allows us to get much snappier with our marketing, especially since tracks can now easily update their particular site with their own specific promotions,” said IGB Chief Executive Adrian Neilan. Meanwhile, Ger’s Strideaway – the property of the O’Mahony Family from Athea – collected the Limerick All-Age Cup at the Rathkeale Coursing Meeting. |
