STRYKER Golf Society held their President, John Scanlan’s, prize day last Saturday afternoon at Limerick Golf Club.The weather was set fair and the society had one of their best outings of the year.Noel Purcell won the President’s prize and was presented with the Dermot P Whelan perpetual trophy.The late Dermot was a former M.D. of Howmedica which is now Stryker and he always encouraged sports at the firm.Noel Purcell plays his golf at Shannon Golf Club and plays off a 13 handicap.Alistair Lynch, the secretary and treasurer of the society, won the Category A prize. Alistair plays his golf in Newcastlewest Golf Club.This year’s captain Michael Ryan of Rathbane Golf club won category B. Stryker vice Captain John Brophy, who also plays his golf in Rathbane, won the front nine while Robert Singleton won the back nine.Robert is a member of Ennis Golf Club.One of Limerick’s best traffic wardens Paul Clancy won the visitors prize.Paul is also a member of Rathbane Golf Club.Gerry ‘The Road Runner’ Meehan came a close second in the visitors section.Gerry has the record for the fastest round of golf at his club Adare Manor. He plays so fast that his friends Sean McMahon and Albert Barry have refused to play with him.There was a fine turn out of the members to honour their President’s day and the standard of golf on a beautiful day was of a high order.Other society golfers who did well on the day included Maurice Whealan, Westley Fitzgerald, Mike Ahern, Harry McNamara and Tom Byrnes.The next big day on the Stryker Golf Societies list will be Michael Ryan’s Captain’s Day at Castletroy Golf Club on the 18th of October.“I was hoping to hold the outing in early June at Newcastlewest Golf club” said Michael, “but we had to call it off as the course was closed due to heavy rain on the day. Hopefully we will get a good day on the 18th.
