Forced into second place were friends Bill O’Shea and Mick O’Donnell, with Frank O’Mahony and Colm Kennedy in third spot.

Fourteen hole competitions are still as popular as ever at magnificent Castletroy GC, with wins this week for Pat Hennessy/Brendan McNamara/Michael Leahy and Frank O’Connell/Michael Treacy senior/Gerry Carroll.

With a terrific 41 points, Dermot McNeill, Joe Neville and Neal Larkin were comfortable winners on the seniors front.

Scoring was hot in the 14-hole weekly ladies competition with an excellent 57 points returned by Margie O’Shea, Jacinta Cunneen and Glory Ryan.  Ethna Leonard/Breida Doheny/Kathleen Argue were two points behind in second with third place filled by Mary Byrne/Annd McCarthy and Peg Loughran.

The club has expressed its deepest sympathy to the extended Cregan Family on the untimely death of Conor Cregan, who died at the weekend.

Newcastle West GC lost one of its great characters inside the last week, namely Gary McMahon.

A gifted all-round sportsman – he won two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals with Kerry in 1959 and ’62 – Gary was a one-time single-figure golfer of note, serving as both Captain and in more recent times as President at Newcastle West.  He would have also played representative golf for the club in his time.

A native of Listowel and eldest son of Bryan ‘The Master’ and his wife Kitty, Gary ran a successful legal practice in Newcastle West for more than 40 years. A fluent Irish speaker, he was also a ballad writer/singer, poet and a conversationalist of note.  Numerous tributes have been paid to Mr. McMahon inside the last week.

He is survived by his wife Joan, children Gearóid, Treasa and Rossa, extended family, relatives and many, many friends.

‘Cad tá sa bhás ach múchadh coinnill le brecadh an lae.’
