Page 1 of 2 Action continues apace in the coveted Fred Daly Cup, a competition for junior players. Adare Manor GC have progressed through to a meeting with Shannon GC next Saturday, courtesy of an admirable win against Castletroy GC. Under the expert tuition of Joe Ruane, the team came up trumps against their more fancied opponents, courtesy of great displays from David Carroll, John Fitzgibbon, Jack McGrath, Aaron Moore, Cormac Beehan, John Roche, Robert Costello and Eoin Kiely. Meanwhile, there were drinks all round after Paddy Hogan aced the short sixth in the Club Singles Qualifier. The quality performer hit the jackpot with a "shortened-grip on a soft eight-iron." It was the latest in the series of hole-in-ones registered over the years by this tremendous club supporter. The leading qualifier in the singles competition itself was Terence Murray, dad of Limerick's All-Star hurling goalkeeper Brian. Matt White (19) has captured the prestigious Bank of Ireland sponsored Ballyclough Cup at Limerick GC. He posted an excellent 69, to win by a stroke from Eugene Wall with Barry Carter third on the same mark. Also in the prizes were Paddy Power, Terence Casey and young Stephen Carroll. Not surprisingly, the great Mike O'Kelly was the top performer in the gross section – the scratch player carded an excellent two under par 70. A gentle reminder Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort is looking for volunteer stewards to ensure smooth running once more of the Irish Open next month – circulars on this request have been forwarded to all clubs in the region and support of this would be greatly appreciated. One of the season's opening Irish Examiner Am-Am tournaments was hosted by Charleville GC, with Vincent Clifford (6), Ian Hughes (11) and PJ Hayes (15) qualifying from their respective categories. The best card was returned by Hayes, with an exemplary 45 points. In the gross section, two-handicapper John Boyle delivered the goods. Charleville will host an Open Senior Singles competition this Wednesday, and there is still some availability on the time sheet. Mention of Open Days, the ladies section had a tremendous turnout for its Bank Of Ireland supported tournament – Eileen Kenny-Ryan took the top prize, closely followed by locals Karen Heffernan and Frances Hawe, with Margaret Quish (44 points) best in the competitive Bronze Division. Husband and wife John and Margaret O'Halloran tasted victory in the season's opening nine-hole mixed foursomes at Castletroy GC. |
