Robert Hanrahan (6) and eight-handicapper Paddy Coleman produced a remarkable 47 points to clinch the Fourball Stableford competition over the championship course at Lahinch GC.

By any standard, this was an exemplary card in most challenging conditions. Also on the Old Course, Gerry Gough (10) was the weekend winner of Monthly Medal with a smashing nett 73, with Diarmuid Leonard (4) second after a commendable round of 76.

The AGM of the Men's Club at Newcastle West GC has been penciled-in for Thursday of next week (January 24th), 8.30pm.

It will be preceded by the re-arranged EGM, which will discuss and approve a revised Men's Club Constitution. All nominations and motions for the AGM must be submitted for the office by close of business next Friday.

A gentle old acquaintance of this scribe went to his eternal reward of late!

Frank Sanquest of Cork lived a fine life – he was 96 at the time of his recent death over the holiday period. As late as only last year, this writer had the privilege, once again, of enjoying a round of golf with this nonagenarian at a Munster Journalists' outing to Ballybunion GC. Blessed with a fine swing, he was still a capable performer on the course despite his advancing years.

On that same afternoon, the sprightly Frank pulled his own cart around – he wasn't "old enough" to invest in an electric version.

A trained artist, Frank worked for a great number of years as Art Editor with the then Cork Examiner and in the latter years of his life he focused exclusively on painting and illustrating, and had several of his works exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. For those of you who have been to Cork GC, the portrait of the legendary Jimmy Bruen is the work of the late Frank.

His work as an artist earned Frank many awards over the years.

Frank was the father of five children – sons Paul, Kevin, Peter and Nicolas, and daughter Roz. Rest in peace, Frank.
