Page 1 of 2 Jackie Harrington - a name that will forever by synonymous with the amateur game, both on the domestic and international stage – proved that he can still turn on the style when emerging triumphant in President Tom Kane's Prize at Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort. ![]() Pat Rickard, board member Limerick City Enterprise Board (left) presents First Prize (Singles) to Eamon Ryan, CEO, LCEB; at the recent LCEB golf outing at Castletroy Golf Club, Limerick. Picture: Kieran Clancy/Picsure Harrington (8) returned a superb 43 points to win from John Feighan on 37 points, who himself edged out local publican Michael Collins. The victor picked up birdies at the famous seventh – which is straddled by a great lake – and another par five, the 12th. In between, he struck a mighty drive on the par four 10th, followed by a short iron for a comfortable three. While he also dropped four shots, Harrington finished the other 11 holes in regulation. Only a short few years ago, the 1979 Irish Close Champion – one of only 115 living champions – captured the inaugural Captain's Prize (Robert Butler, property developer) at a club where he is, and rightly so, an honorary member. And in this year's Irish Open Pro-Am, Harrington rolled back the years with some marvelous play that greatly impressed the galleries. NEWCASTLE West GC duo Frank Geary and Brian Hickey have won the prestigious Holmpatrick Cup at St. Andrews GC. In order to perform at the Home of Golf, the pair first won out their club competition, followed this up with victory in the county final at Limerick GC and then triumphed on the provincial stage. On day one at St. Andrews, Messrs. Geary and Hickey hit 44 points in the stableford format competition to hold a slender two points advantage. However, the pair surpassed themselves with an incredible 47 points the following afternoon to emerge handsome winners. "We played some tremendous golf okay, but some breaks went our way also," said Geary, a pretty useful operator (off 12 these days). Astonishingly, Hickey (8) partnered Maurice Noonan to win the same title 12 months ago, when they represented Adare Manor GC, where the former is also a long-standing member. "Brian's achievement is incredible, something which amazed the organisers and I don't think this particular feat will ever again be achieved. He really is a player on top of his game at the moment," Geary stated. LIMERICK County GC has introduced a Driving Range Club, with the initial offer limited to the first 200 subscribers. The joining fee is €200, which includes ten rounds of golf and ten Bonus Range Cards (100 free balls), along with 20 sessions on The Explainer – 'which turns swing thoughs into swing feelings.' Inside the last number of weeks, the range has also installed a new automated tee-up system, an initiative that has gone down well with users. |
