Page 1 of 2 Holders Castletroy GC have advanced to the provincial semi-finals of the Bulmers sponsored Munster Senior Cup at Monkstown GC next month.
In all-Limerick North Munster final at Ennis GC, Castletroy emerged winners over Limerick GC by a comfortable margin with notable displays by Stephen Moloney, Jason Tobin and John Kavanagh.
Also through to the finals weekend (August 23/24) at centenary-celebrating Monkstown are Doneraile GC (who beat Newcastle West GC in their semi-final at Ring of Kerry GC), Douglas GC and Thurles GC. The semi-final draw is: Castletroy v Doneraile and Douglas v Thurles. VICTORIA Morris of Limerick GC went to the semi-final stage of the Pat Fletcher Plate at the Lancome Irish Girls’ Close Amateur Championship at Mullingar GC. Morris was beaten by Agnes Doherty (Ballyliffin GC) in her semi-final, with Doherty losing at the third extra-hole in a tremendous final against Caoimhe Quinn of Dungannon GC. SEAMUS King (Newcastle West GC) is a member of the Munster Boys team which contests the Inter-Provincial Championship at Cork GC this week. The selection for King is a reward for his fine performance in the recent Munster Boys Championship at Mitchelstown GC. Peter English of Limerick GC is team captain. Munster: Seamus King (Newcastle West GC), Danial Hallissey (Muskerry GC), Andrew Kelly (Charleville GC), Ian O’Rourke (Cork GC), Ross O’ Sullivan (Fota Island GC) and Colm O’Sullivan (do). Elsewhere on the boys front, Chris Keightley of East Clare GC has won the Leinster Boys Amateur Open Championship at Tullamore GC–he added a brilliant closing round of three under par 69 to earlier efforts of 70, 72 and 71 to finish with a four round aggregate of 282 and a clear three stroke victory. Only the other week, Keightley finished runner-up in the Munster Boys Championship at Mitchelstown.
ON AN afternoon on which Padraig Harrington secured the British Open Championship for the second year on the trot, Thomas Foley (12) performed heroically on the challenging Newcastle West GG to win Captain Tommy Greaney’s Prize. Foley fired an excellent 65 to win on the back nine from Brian O’Connor (8) with former captain and president Tim Roche (15) next on 66.
