The other top ten positions were filled by Brian Golding (10), Rob Cussen (10), Martin Ralph (10), Maurice Windle (15), Tony Kennedy (11), Maurice McAuliffe (10) and Mike Barry. The best gross card was returned by three-handicapper Diarmuid Scanlan who covered the course in 75 blows. Category wins were secured by Alister Lynch, Jack Mulvihill and Brian Collins, while Richard Collins was top performer in the Past Captains’ section.
Elsewhere, a return of 42 points won popular Captain John O’Gorman’s Prize for David Walsh at Adare Manor GC–he held off the determined challenge of Milo Spillane with Jimmy McCarthy next best. Declan O’Brien was just one over for his round, good enough to win the gross prize. Category wins were earned by Anthony Howard, Paddy Hogan and Liam Whelan. Young Mark Fitzgerald struck a magnificent 44 points to lift the Captain’s Prize to junior members, with Davy Lyons and Keith Cawley also leading lights on this front. Lady Captain Jean Ryan will host her re-arranged prize on Sunday next. IN the North Munster Final of the Bulmers Junior Cup, Adare Manor GC meet Limerick County GC at Dromoland on this Wednesday (4pm). Meanwhile, Rathbane GC will stage its Junior, Intermediate and Minor Scratch Cups next weekend (061/313655), and it’s a similar case at Limerick County with Estuary Fuels and Anglo Irish Bank announced as sponsors (061/351881). Elsewhere, a club compilation error omitted John Anthony Moran (5) from the winners position of the Junior Cup at Ballykisteen GC–it was a genuine error but it’s most worthy to note the current well-being of a great sporting ambassador. On the playing front, Pat McNamara emerged as a surprise but merited winner with a magnificent 64 of the Tim Duggan Insurance sponsored July Medal at Limerick GC, closely followed in the scoring by Gerard Leyden and Tom O’Carroll, with Dermot Gallagher only one over par to lift the gross prize.
At Rathbane GC the Monthly Medal was won in spectacular fashion by Sean Curran on 63 nett–Mark O’Doherty was only two strokes behind, on the same mark as third-placed Christy Downes. Six-handicapper Eddie Costelloe bettered his handicap by a couple of strokes in the gross category. The great Dermot Morris was a quality winner of the gross section in the Monthly Medal at Lahinch GC. A REMINDER the South of Ireland Championship opens at Lahinch GC on Saturday next and continues through until next Wednesday (July 30, with final at 2pm). |
