Page 1 of 2 Limerick clubs dominated the Bulmers Irish Cups and Shields Munster Finals at centenary celebrating Monkstown GC.
Holders Castletroy GC endured a few anxious moments in their Senior Cup semi-final victory over Doneraile GC were always in control in their final meeting with Thurles GC, thanks to big performances from the experienced trio of Stephen Moloney, John Kavanagh and Jason Tobin, Eamon Haugh and Cian Daly were also lead contributors in this excellent victory.
1979 Irish Close Champion Jackie Harrington’s son Damien was the star performer as Adare Manor GC won a historic Junior Cup. Young Harrington holed the winning putt against Joseph O’Keeffe (Douglas GC) in the semi-final, which went to the 21st, and repeated the massive feat against Alan Campbell (Mitchelstown GC) in the following morning’s final. Others on the Adare selection included 16-year-old David Carroll, Brian Hickey, Damien Moloney, Martin Costello and John Hickey. There were joyous scenes afterwards when Sean McMahon, GUI Munster Chairman and Adare Manor GC stalwart, presented the winning cup to team captain Tom Griffin and fellow selector Maurice Noonan. The All-Ireland Finals will be back at Monkstown GC from September 17th-20th. Seven locals made the knock-out element of a competitive Shannon Transport Logistics (STL) sponsored Limerick Boys Championship at Newcastle West GC. The leading qualifiers were Adare Manor GC duo Cormac Behan and Aaron Moore with level-par rounds of 72, while also making it through to the last 16 were Newcastle West GC quartet Billy Nash, Andrew Linehan, Seamus King and Andrew McCormack, with Limerick GC’s Darragh Gerraghy securing the last of the 16 qualifying positions.
Garraghy produced the biggest shock of the opening round proper with victory over Behan, while others to progress through to the quarter-finals were Moore and King. Garraghy again sparkled in the last eight, eliminating Fota Island GC’s Tomas Moore 2&1 while King, a recent top performer with Munster Boys, knocked-out Moore 3&2.
