In the semi-finals, Garraghy’s interest in the championship was ended by Matthew McCarthy (Ballybunion GC), 2&1, and shortly afterwards King was beaten 3&2 by Michael O’Shaughnessy (Dooks GC), which set-up an all-Kerry final for the second year on the trot.  In that final, O’Shaughnessy overcame McCarthy in an epic battle that went all the way to the 18th.

Gerry and Cormac McManus of Limerick GC successfully defended their title at the World Invitational Father & Son Tournament in testing conditions at Waterville GC.

Tied on 82 points with Seve and Mike Evanoff of Boston entering the final round, the battle was tight right up until the 15th when the McManus’ birdied the par four and repeated the feat at the penultimate hole to finish on 121 points, four clear of their US challengers.  Bart and Chip Witherspoon of Kiawah Island were in third place.

Previous winners JP and Kieran McManus finished in sixth place.

A number of Limerick players will be represented in the regional final of The Sunday Tribune/Golfsure All-Ireland Club Singles at Mallow GC on Monday next.

Players from most clubs across Munster will take part with the leading performers qualifying for the All-Ireland Finals to be staged in The Algarve during a week-long stay, beginning on September 26th.

Limerick representatives at Mallow GC are: Eugene Mackessy (Adare GC), Phil Mann (Adare Manor GC), Jude Byrne (Rathbane GC), Pat McNamara (Limerick GC), Sean Curran (Rathbane GC), Maura Devenney (Castletroy GC), Sheila Grace (Limerick County GC), Dermot Cross (Castletroy GC), Paul Butler (Limerick GC), Ros Grogan (Limerick County GC), while others of interest include Jim Dunne (East Clare GC), Jean Fleming (East Clare GC), Jimmy Doyle (Shannon GC), Leonard Shanahan (Dromoland GC), Beate Porter (Dromoland GC) and Michael and Marie Scroope of Nenagh GC.

And, the aforementioned Phil Mann warmed-up for her participation in this fine championship with a third place finish in the Lady President’s Prize (Mary O’Brien) at Adare Manor.  The competition was won with a glorious 43 points by Gretta O’Regan, with Margaret Hennessy only a point behind in second place. Ina Desmond was once more the best performer in the gross section.
