Page 1 of 2 Mike Kemmy of Limerick GC came desperately close to ending the interest of defending champion Darren Crowe (Dunmurray GC, Belfast) at the second round stage of the 107th McNamara Builders sponsored South of Ireland Championship at Lahinch GC. Kemmy, a recent winner of President Pat Gleeson's Prize over the same course with a magnificent 41 points off his plus one handicap and off the blue markers, was squeezed out at the 18th after Crowe holed a ten-footer for birdie to take the lead for the first but most important stage. Crowe did make his exist at the next round, stunned by Kieran Canty. One of those still standing at the quarter-final stage was likeable secretary/manager of Limerick GC and current international Pat Murray, who staged a remarkable recovery against David Reilly–Murray was five down at the turn but won at the 18th and it was something similar in his next round win against James Fox. Eamon Haugh (Castletroy GC) was another fancied to make progress as far as the last eight, at least. Teenager Seamus King of Newcastle West GC was a member of the Munster Team that finished runners-up to Ulster in the Golfsure sponsored Inter-provincial Boys Championship at Cork GC. Munster tied with Leinster on points, but the holders retained their title on a countback. All week, King contributed hugely, both in the singles and foursomes matches, to Munster's bid for the championship. He and Daniel Hallissey were unbeaten over three days in their foursome matches. However, luck failed to shine on King in his final singles game against Sean Morrision when his final drive struck a tree and found an unplayable lie, which saw the hole lost by the West Limerick youth and game tie halved, enough to ensure Ulster were overall winners. King earned 1.5 points out of a possible three in his singles games. |
