Page 1 of 2 Sean McMahon has been unanimously re-elected as Chairman of the Munster Golfing Union of Ireland Branch.
The sweet-striking member of Adare Manor GC has enjoyed many decades as an officer of the southern union, and was first elected to its top position only a short few years back – he also serves on a number of national committees, and has, from time to time, represented the union at overseas events. McMahon has a keen interest in the development of all strands of the sport, particularly at youth level where he has been deeply involved in the development of a provincial academy for elite players. This has proved to be a tremendous success in its relatively short time-span, and there is every reasonably belief to suggest that players coming through from here will achieve much in the years to come.
Munster GUI delegates have endorsed proposals from The Council of National Golf Unions with regard handicap adjustments, scheduled to come into effect from February of next year. The first of two changes was passed unanimously. It read: “That the GUI (Golfing Union of Ireland) retain the status quo whereby it directs the scores returned in society competitions, played over a course which the unions have allotted a scratch score, shall qualify for handicap reductions but not increase.” The second proposal involves the alteration of handicap; currently playing handicap increases are only implemented at the end of each month. But under the revised rule “alterations to playing handicaps, increases and decreases, shall be made as soon as practicable after close of competition or after the score/s become known to the home club and displayed in a prominent position.”
Delegates expressed concern about the increased workload of handicap secretaries, and the claim that there would be much confusion and frustration as each club would handle the increased workload differently. Ultimately, the Munster clubs were asked to along with the change, monitor the problems as they arise and inform the Munster Branch.
