Pat Murray of Limerick GC and Castletroy GC's Stephen Moloney have been selected as members of the Munster Team that competes at the Golsure Inter-Provincial Championship at Athlone GC this Wednesday through to Friday.

The duo, along with Cian McNamara who has since turned professional, were also part of the Munster Team which won the championship after a ten-year break 12 months ago at County Louth GC.

The title went south for the first time since 1997 as Munster won 22 matches to Leinster's 21 over the course of the three-day contest. "It was a great team performance. We expected to do well coming in and there was a wonderful team spirit in the camp," commented Munster Captain John Carroll, who holds a similar position this year.

"A few people on the periphery said there was a lot of old stagers in the side, but the results speak volumes for those lads. The experience of guys like Pat Murray definitely helped the team." Afterwards, the team to represent Ireland in the Home Internationals at the same venue was announced – not surprisingly it included Pat Murray, who reached the 5th round at this year's 107th McNamara Builders sponsored South of Ireland at Lahinch, with Cian McNamara as first reserve. McNamara (22), a former South champion, returned from a successful scholarship at East Tennessee State University earlier in the Summer and announced his expected decision to turn professional immediately.

He will join the Tour Qualifying School at Moliets, France in the middle of September. Adare Manor GC's Sean McMahon is the 2008 Chairman of the Munster Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland, and next year will assume the Presidency at national level (the first local man to hold the position since Jack Lynch of Limerick GC a few years back).

Munster: Pat Murray (Limerick GC), Stephen Moloney (Castletroy GC), Karl Borneman (Douglas GC), Paul Buckley (Kanturk GC), Kieran Canty (Douglas GC), John Morris (Rosslare GC), Aaron O'Callaghan (Douglas GC), Dave O'Donovan (Muskerry GC), Gary O'Flaherty (Cork GC) and Seamus Power (West Waterford GC). Non-travelling reserve: Kieran McCarthy (Kinsale GC).

Limerick's two representatives in the €150,000 Challenge of Ireland at the picturesque Christy O'Connor junior designed Glasson GC, near Athlone.

Tim Rice, a regular on the European Challenge Tour and third-ranked Euro Pro Tour, missed the cut by three strokes after shooting rounds of 73 and 76. Cian McNamara, who at 18 became one of the youngest winners of the South of Ireland Amateur Championship at Lahinch back in 2004, made his debut in this tournament but like Rice also failed to make the weekend action. He carded consecutive rounds of 78 to be ten shots off the cut, but will surely gain from this experience.
