The Short Game - 6th February

Three brave performers had to be “rescued” from the course at Limerick County GC after an unexpected early-morning fall of snow arrived on the scheduled opening day of competition.

The three-ball were only a few holes into the round when they were forced to battle their way home through a blizzard after a siren sounded to signal the cancellation of play.  Only a short while earlier, the course was given the thumbs-up following a thorough inspection but once again Mother Nature intervened and the place was soon covered in a blanket of white snow flakes.

Weather permitting, the club will, hopefully, stage its first competition (12 Hole Singles) of 2008 on Sunday next.

And, the draw for the Tony Connolly sponsored Winter League will take place in the pavilion tomorrow (Thursday) night, with a number of places still available by contacting the club at 061/351881. The teams will be posted for viewing on Friday morning next, with the first round of the tournament to begin from next Monday (February 11th).

An EGM of Charleville GC is penciled-in for Sunday next, taking place in the clubhouse with a 6pm (sharp) starting-time.

On the ladies front, Kathleen Finn won the latest installment of the ‘Young at Heart’ weekly competition, returning a creditable 21 points to win by a whisker from Ann Weekes with Ann Smith in third on 19 points for this nine-hole outing.  The Ladies Spring League is now up-and-running at the North Cork club, with the Mike Murphy sponsored Men’s Winter League scheduled to commence the weekend after next.

At Castletroy GC, its Winter League is also in full swing for the new season – it continues over the next three weekends.

Elsewhere, Adare Manor GC’s Spring League will commence on the weekend ending February 17th – it takes the format of Fourball, Foursomes and Singles, with quarter-finals, semi-finals and final to follow (late March).  The leading eight teams after three rounds will qualify for the knock-out stages of the championship.

Each team consists of six players with a combined maximum handicap of 75.

Word from Maigueside also is that Joey Hickey is still rejoicing in his stupendous eagle at the notoriously difficult par five, achieved by way of a drive, seven-iron and “lob-wedge.”  His playing partner, Pat Butler, described the achievement as “out of this world.”
