ADARE Manor GC managed to host a regular 15-hole Fourball Competition against a catalogue of sporting cancellations elsewhere. The winning duo with an incredible return of 45 points were regular partners Jackie Harrington and Seamus Dundon, a round that included no less than six birdies. Not surprisingly, the pair were well-ahead of second-placed Michael Hickey with an excellent 40 points, with Paddy Quinlivan and Jack O’Hurley third with the same score. The hosts, Shannon GC and Castletroy GC competed for the Quaid Cup (seniors), with victory here for the second year on the trot secured by Shannon. Adare’s best card, 40 points, came courtesy of Sean Fitzgibbon and Jack O’Dwyer, while the smooth running of the competition was largely down to the evergreen Joe Dunleavy. Tim King and Andy O’Dea, with a quality 42 points, won the weekly seniors fourball. A reminder, Adare Manor will host its Captains’ Dinner Social at The Castletroy Park Hotel on Friday next, with limited ticket availability from the clubhouse. THERE was a clean sweep by Limerick Guests in the Bus Eireann/Irish Rail supported outing of the Munster Journalists’ GS at a surprisingly dry Adare Manor GG. Out in front, not for the first time in this annual event, was retired Station Manager of Colbert Station Con Walsh with a very creditable 38 points. He was closely followed in the pecking order by host club captain John O’Gorman, with Irish Rail Development Manager Jim Gallivan in third spot on 36 points, a very fine return given his enforced absence from the fairways of his home club for the best part of six months due to a back problem. Others in the running for prizes in the guest section include Joe Fitzgerald of the sponsors, club president Noel O’Connell, Mick Lynch and Paddy Cremin. The course itself is in remarkably condition, with the greens truly superb and not a ‘temporary,’ nor indeed needed even after the almighty rainfall experienced in these parts over the last few weeks, or should that be months. Credit here to the ground staff, and words or praise also for the in-house staff, in the office and those pleasant trio involved for catering and restaurant duties. FOUR winners of some prestigious Cup competitions at Castletroy GC have been confirmed. Gordon O’Reilly triumphed in the Fine Cup 2008, beating Diarmuid Leonard in the decider. Semi-finalists in this competition were Eimhin Wallace and Richard Leahy. The Shannon Cup for the next year has been secured by Kieran Horgan, who overcame Michael Noonan in the final. The semi-finalists here were Gearoid Murphy and Louis Keegan. Noel Fitzgibbon (12), Ailbe Noonan and Eamon Haugh (+1), who carded a magnificent 47 points, emerged as winners of the Quinn Cup. In the Nursery Cup, outright victory was taken by PJ Noonan and Con Shanahan. In the club Fourball Hamper competition, eight-handicapper Eddie Cummins and Colm Power (12) were in glorious form when posting 48 points to enjoy a comfortable win. There were also podium finishes for Des McCarthy and Martin Lucey, John and Paddy O’Halloran and the aforementioned pairing of Noonan and Fitzgibbon. THREE birdies were part of the overall package when Johnny McCrory, Stephen Ryan and Michael Ryan emerged as winners of a most competitive seniors scramble at Limerick GC. All three contributed their fair share to this victory, in a competition that is favoured by the majority of senior members at Ballyclough. Meanwhile, the Annual Seniors Dinner has been arranged for Wednesday, December 3rd with early booking – through any committee member – most advisable. DECLAN Browne has been named 2008 Golfer of the Year at Limerick County GC, reaping a deserved accolade for a sting of tremendous results throughout the season. He will be presented with his award at the final prize-giving ceremony on Thursday of next week, November 20th. Browne (9) partnered Pat Power (16) to win the 12-hole Club Fourball Competition with an impressive 29 points, just one ahead of Eamon Cregan and John Gleeson. 2008 Irish Open venue Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort has announced a special two-day Open Singles at its splendid Robert Trent Jones designed championship course later this month – a time sheet is in operation and further details can be had from assistant PGA professional Mike Quinlan in the golf shot at 061/605200. The event offers a great chance to play one of the truly great parkland lay-outs this country has on offer. Given its magnificent drainage, the course itself is in tremendous shape after the recent deluge experienced in the mid-west. |
