DUBAI Desert Classic champion Rory McIlroy is a likely participant in
next year’s JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am at Adare Manor Hotel &
Golf Resort. McIlroy’s winning score was five shots better than that of ’08 champion Tiger Woods, one of a galaxy of stars already confirmed for the Robert Trent Jones designed championship course at Adare. Incidentally, admission for the major charity fundraiser again be in the form of baseball caps and these will go on sale from April onwards. A BRILLIANT 36 points from Adrian Enright (13) and John Hogan (20) was only barely sufficient for them to win the top prize in the weekly 14 Hole Club Fourball at Newcastle West GC. The pair only won on the back six from Glin duo John A. Culhane (15) and Ben Mullane (24). Similar competitions have been arranged for the men’s club for the remainder of the month. Meanwhile, the draw for the Ladies Spring League will take place in the clubhouse tomorrow (Thursday), with teams and competition rules to be posted in locker room immediately afterwards. Round one of the league must be completed before Saturday, March 14th. The Ladies Club has also announced the continuation of its Monthly Ten Hole competition throughout February. SCORING was keen on the part of Ziggy Maher and Caroline O’Donnell who posted a superb 38 points to win the Ladies 13 Hole Club Scotch Foursomes competition at Limerick GC. The pair had plenty in hand over second-place Cliodhna Mulcahy and Yvonne O’Riordan, who themselves produced some fine passages of play. The best gross prize was claimed by the competitive pairing of Ailish Dilger and Marie Moran. In Senior Men’s activity, newcomers Tony Doyle and Noel Kelly, along with Chris Cullinhan scooped first prize in the opening competition of 2009. In second place were Joe Hayes, Maurice Landers and Eamon Flahive. Meanwhile Brian Moroney has been voted-in as Senior Captain, with Dermot Dunne as vice-Captain. Joe McCormack retains his President’s jacket, while Con Conroy keeps his job as Handicap Secretary. REGULAR partners Fonsie Franklin and Paddy Quinlivan, both off 16, were two under par for the homeward trip as they finished winners of the Club Two Ball Scramble at Adare Manor GC. The pair pocketed birdies at the short 12th and challenging par four 18th. Two shots behind in the runners-up berth were Michael Hickey (13) and Paddy Hogan (13), an improvement of one spot by the pair from a similar competition staged a few weeks earlier. Brothers Maurice and Michael Noonan were a close third. Next weekend marks the start of the Men’s Spring League, with a Fourball for openers. Team lists are posted in the clubhouse and the entry fee, to be paid before competition starts, is €30 per pair. On the seniors front, the leading four pairs home in the 14 Hole Fourball Competition were Pat Carroll & Pat Dineen; Noel Hickey & Noel O’Connell; John O’Brien & Patsy O’Sullivan and Jack O’Hurley and Ger Meehan. BALLYKISTEEN GC’s new website went live earlier this Wednesday, and is accessible at www.ballykisteengolfclub.com - it will feature regular updates on offers for members and visitors alike. Meanwhile, Alan Dunphy has assumed the role as Men’s Captain, with Mike Keegan as his deputy for the season ahead. Larry Kelly has succeeded Raymond Flynn for a two year term as President. Colm Barry is the club’s new PRO and the outgoing incumbent, John Hughes, takes over from the aforementioned Keegan as Honorary Secretary. Open Singles continue on Wednesdays (on Mondays for seniors), with all bookings through the Pro Shop at 062/32117. BIRDIES at the par three 10th and 16th (par four) proved crucial in Tom Reidy claiming the main podium spot in Shannon GC’s 15 Hole Singles Stableford competition for Men. Reidy finished his round with a cracking 35 points, the same score as second-place Don O’Shea. The runner-up finished the closing nine holes in a commendable one over par. The Men’s Winter League continues with the second round scheduled for next weekend, and participants are reminded that they can also simultaneously play in the weekly 15 Hole competition. And, the early pace setters in the Ladies Winter League are The Eagles selection of Jean Murphy, Marie Hogan and Eileen Sheery, closely followed by The Social Partners team of Mary Sheehan, Nancy Parry and Paul Kilmartin. Indeed only four points separate the top six teams after round one of the enjoyable team event. JOE TEEFY returned to a familiar berth when claiming overall top spot in the Seniors 16 Hole Singles competition at Limerick County GC, carding a decent 34 points to edge-out TJ Walsh. Meanwhile, teams in the Tony Connolly sponsored Winter League are reminded that the second round of the competition must be completed by next Saturday. |
