Chris created a massive upset when he steered rank outsider Capt Chaos (9/1) to a sensational win in the Aussie Rules European Breeders Fund Tetrarch Stakes at The Curragh.
A real ‘non-contender’ of the five runners, the Eddie Lynahm-trained colt was short of room just inside the two pole but Hayes – champion apprentice for the past two seasons – did not panic and his mount burst through just over a furlong out. Long-time leader Great War Eagle (5/2), representing Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh, tried to fight back but Capt Chaos comfortably held him to score by a length and three-quarters. “I don’t think the first two from the English Guineas will be quaking in their boots, so we’ll probably go for the Ballycorus Stakes next (at Leopardstown on June 11,” stated Lynam.
Hegrid (10/3) appeared on course for victory when disaster struck. Patiently handled by Ruby Walsh, Hegrid improved to sweep ahead between the final two fences and had the contest is safe keeping when crashing out at the last. In the process, he brought down Go Silver Bullet (7/2) and this left Salt Lake in for a bloodless triumph. “He’s a horse who has been a bit unlucky at time and it’s nice he’s got a bit of luck now. It’s a good omen for Andre. He was the first winner for me last season and now’s he’s the first for me again this season,” said O’Grady. Meanwhile, a timely reminder that Limerick’s Twilight Programme commences on Thursday of next week, with Don Baker lined-up for post racing musical entertainment – a whole variety of packages are available, visit www.limerickraces.ie. Austin Leahy’s Aseasyas (11/4f), with two solid runs under her belt this season, reaped the reward of consistency when landing the Enjoy The Action At Tipperary As A Member Handicap at Tipperary. Always close to the pace, the daughter of Medecis was driven to the front with less than two furlongs to run by Fran Berry. Voldmort (7/1), well-supported in the morning prices, was soon out after the winner but Aseasyas had plenty in hand and was nicely on top close home. Commented Leahy: “I’m delighted and she will now go for a mile and 100 yards handicap at Killarney. I like Killarney and have had a good bit of luck there over the years.” ON a night when Ger Lyons enjoyed a bonanza at Dundalk, completing a magnificent treble, it was young apprentice Emmet McNamara who kicked-it all off. McNamara, son of Rathkeale trainer Eric, partnered Pasar Silbano (11/10f) to a convincing win in the Irish Stallion Farms 2YO Race and followed-up her recent debut win over course and distance. “I have a nice bunch of two year old fillies,” declared Lyons after the daughter of Elnadim beat the only other previous winner in the field, Emily Dickinson (9/4). “She has won well and will probably go for the Marble Hill now and then onto Royal Ascot for the Queen Mary,” added Lyons, who won the same outing a year ago with Elletelle.
Havewesix eventually came good at a point-to-point meeting at Lisronagh, near Clonmel over the Bank Holiday Weekend. The property of father-and-son Francie and Anthony Kenny, along with Vincent Feheney, all of Askeaton, Havewesix was having his 15th outing and was never even previously placed. “It was unexpected okay, but we’ve been waiting an awful long time for this maiden success,” commented Anthony Kenny. In the end, the winner scored with consummate ease. |
